The Hook Lighthouse - Ireland's Oldest Operating Beacon
This stalwart beacon has been operating for 800 Years!
The Hook Lighthouse, on the Hook Peninsula, in Ireland, has provided a beacon for mariners for centuries. The current structure was built by William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, in 1245.
There were previous structures on the site, but the building that is there now is approaching 800 years old. That makes it one of the oldest lighthouses in the entire world, and certainly the oldest in the United Kingdom.
Research and historical records indicate that some sort of functioning light for sailors was on the site from as early as the 5th century.
Although the official name is the Hook Head Lighthouse, it's known affectionately by those who live nearby as "the Tower of Hook."

The First Lighthouse Built on the West Coast of the United States
Here's a surprising lighthouse fact. Do you know where the first light tower ever erected on the west coast of the United States was?
It was in San Francisco Bay - on the same rock of an island as the 'inescapable' Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. That's right - It was on Alcatraz Island!
In the picture below, it stands in front of the prison building, near the right end.

The original light, which was erected in 1853, but not lit until the following year, was damaged by a 1906 earthquake. The new, taller one that was built to replace it (in 1909) still stands there today.
When the prison closed in 1963, the beacon was automated, and the three lighthouse keepers were dismissed.
